5 Ways My Dog Makes Me Laugh

They say women like guys with a sense of humor. My sweet pup, Riggins, makes me giggle so much, he must be the talk of the neighborhood with all the female dogs. What does he do that makes me LOL throughout the day? I’m glad you asked!

Riggins loves to be rubbed behind his ears or on his chest. While spooning in bed, I’ll put my arm around him and scratch his chest until I am tired and want to go back to sleep. When I do, he swings his head around and looks at me as if to say, “You don’t think you’re finished doing, that do you? Because you aren’t.” Some dogs will paw at you or push your hand up with their nose. Not Riggins. He uses his beautiful pumpkin eyes to get what he wants. When I laugh at his look, he knows he’s got me and that I wouldn’t dare not follow through with more pets!

2. His need for attention

My darling boy LOVES the dog park, which he sees as a “pay attention to me” place. Riggins will circle the grounds, looking for humans who have yet to give him the attention he so richly deserves. When he eyes a target, he will walk over and lean in. You really have no choice but to pet the big ball of fur who is forcing himself on you.

As a dog sitter, Riggins and I often have other pups along with us during our adventures. That just makes Riggins job easier. He has long grown out of his “cute” phase and doesn’t have the striking quality that his Golden Retriever or Dalmatian friend have. No problemo! My boy is smart and knows that his buddies won’t stick around to enjoy the praise, so when someone bends down to pet his friends, Riggins will sneak in between the other dog and the unknowing human. BAM! Now he is getting the attention! The ol’ bait and switch — dog park style!

3. His willingness to help open presents

There are few things Riggins likes better than a wrapped gift. I used to think he opened his gifts because he could smell there was a treat inside, but Riggins isn’t picky. He will open any present. Just this past holiday, Riggins felt the need to open a couple of my gifts. I sat back and giggled, even helping him along now and then.

4. His need to have it “his way” when he wants to get up on the human furniture

There are dogs in this world who aren’t allowed on the human furniture. Shocking — I know! Of course, my Riggins isn’t one of them. When Riggins wants up on the human bed, he will come over next to it, lean his face next to mine, and whine. “Come on up,” I’ll groan as I roll over and make room for him. Why do I even try? I know what is going to happen. I’m going to have to get out from under the warm comfy covers and put my feet on the cold floor, standing up before his highness jumps up to settle in. Once my pup is curled up in MY warm spot with his head on the pillow, I can climb up and over him to snuggle.

The same exact thing happens when he wants to get on the sofa. He stands next to me and whines, I have to stand up, he jumps up and makes himself comfortable, and then I’m able to relax again.

He has a similar issue with the car. He sits in the back seat behind the passenger side, but he has to get up on the driver side, and walk over to his side and sit down.

I don’t know how he got these little ticks about how and when he will jump up, but he’s the only living being I know who could make me get out of my warm bed in the cold, wee early hours of the morning with a smile.

5. Riggins and his mini-me

My landlady/friend has a little pup named Louie, who is Riggins’ mini-me. The two of them are adorable together. They aren’t even trying to be funny, they just are. Whether it’s watching me eat or patrolling the backyard, Riggins and Louie are doing it together. The world has seen great comedy duos — Cheech and Chong, Abott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy — but none come near to the cuteness level of Riggins and Louie!

Dogs are such wonderful companions that it’s no surprise they make us giggle. What does your dog do that makes you smile? Let us know in the comments.
