My Pup Straps on Maggie Modena’s Dog Harness Backpack

I’m a big fan of all things dog and adorable, so I was really excited to review the new harness backpack from designer Maggie Modena. Launched via Kickstarter and now available for purchase on her website, these trendy little bags are not your typical rugged-dog packs — they are super fashion-forward, but also surprisingly practical. You can even get a matching backpack for yourself and coordinate with your pup!

I tried out the harness backpack with a pastel print in size small for my 13-year-old Chihuahua/Doxie mix, who is always game for trying new things! The website had easy-to-follow sizing instructions, and I got the right one for my pup without issues. Be warned that the dog packs only come in three sizes — extra small, small, and medium — so this isn’t a product for pups bigger than about 25 pounds.

Mercury is a somewhat-sausage-shaped little dog, and I was thrilled to discover that this bag was perfectly sized for him! Modena, in fact, created the bag to fit her Pug and French Bulldog.

Mercury first used his pack in on a trip to our favorite dog beach. He took immediately to the pack, and we used its back clip for our walk. Mercury got LOTS of attention from other dog owners. Everyone wanted to know where we had gotten the bag, so clearly I’m not the only one who thinks it’s very fashionable!

I wanted him to actually use the bag, though, which meant I had to come up with something for him to carry. Mercury doesn’t care about toys, so I ended up tucking one of his shirts inside because our spring weather is still a little untrustworthy and I thought it might get chilly on the beach. I definitely could imagine myself entrusting Mercury with my keys on a summer walk if I was wearing a sundress without pockets.

Dogster scorecard for Maggie Modena Dog Harness Backpack

Quality: A bit expensive for my taste, but pretty on par with what luxury pet items cost. The backpack is super well-designed and made, and I think it will have years of life.

Style: Adorable — it’s like a tiny fashion backpack, except for your dog! The packs come in lots of fun and trendy designs, which are sure to complement any dog’s style. My dog got LOTS of attention each time he wore it out in fashion-forward Brooklyn.

Function: Very functional. The backpack is also a harness, with front- and rear-clip attachments. However, I had a bit of a hard time coming up with things that my little dog could actually carry that weren’t too big or too heavy. If your small dog likes toys, I think it would be really helpful for her to carry her own.

Creativity: Really fun concept. Unlike most dog backpacks, this one looks just like one people would wear and comes in really fun patterns.

Value: Not cheap at $44.95, but totally reasonable given the boutique quality, and it’s made in the United States.

Bottom line

If you’ve got a bit of disposable income and are looking for a really nice backpack for your small dog, you won’t be disappointed with this bag! It’s well constructed and practical (in that it’s both a backpack and a harness), and comes in a variety of patterns from which to choose.
