The College of Veterinarians of British Columbia recently voted to ban veterinarians from performing cosmetic ear cropping on dogs.

The province joins Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan, which have all banned the procedure. Australia, New Zealand, and some European countries have also outlawed the controversial surgery, which historically has been performed on certain breeds, including Doberman Pinschers and Great Danes. Cropping is legal in Ontario, Canada, as well as in the United States, although some states regulate the procedure. Veterinarians who defy the ban may be prosecuted under British Columbia’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
