The Scoop: Josh Rubin, Evan Orensten, and Logan

The Scoop: Josh Rubin, Evan Orensten, and Logan

Josh Rubin and Evan Orensten are the founders of Cool Hunting aka one of my favorite websites in existence. Founded in 2003, Cool Hunting quickly became the website for all things design-related. Of course, it’s no surprise to us that Josh and Evan also happen to be huge dog lovers! Today, we’re getting to know the four-legged muse behind this dynamic duo.

What’s “The Scoop”? Our first Sealyham was Otis; we got him from France Bergeron, a breeder in Québec. We loved him so much, two years later we decided to get another. Logan came from the same breeder and has the same mother as Otis. At first Otis wasn’t too impressed with Logan, but over the years they became best friends. Sadly, Otis left us a few month back and we’ve all had to adjust to this new life. Once Logan was over the initial mourning he quickly realized that he’s the star of the show and gets tons more attention. He’s definitely into that.

We love Sealyhams because they have big personalities, but are very chill. They’re known as both clowns and couch potatoes within the Terrier group. They’re small, but hearty. Being based in NYC, these are great attributes. Plus they’re ridiculously cut.

Favorite Toy? Logan isn’t super in to toys. He does love treats, though. Often we’ll put some treats in a Squirrel House and he loves that; I guess that makes it his favorite toy. The Squirrel House is a plush vessel that holds little stuffed squirrels. So we wedge some treats in there with the squirrels and make a bit of a puzzle out of it. We usually give him a Squirrel House on our way out the door if he’s staying home alone. That’s the one scenario he’s still adjusting to—being home alone.

Favorite Food? Primal raw meat (various types), Orijen Six Fish Kibble, Honest Kitchen base vegetable mix. Dr. Becker’s Bites

Favorite place to sleep? Evan and I each have Cloud7 dog beds by our desks in the office and Logan rotates between the two. At home he sleeps in bed with us at night and if he’s home alone usually likes to perch on top of the highest pillows on the sofa.

Pet Peeves? Skateboards. Can’t stand ’em.

Best Trick? Sitting upright balanced on his big butt and hind legs. We call this “sitting pretty,” he calls it “working for treats.”

Gear? Leather studded collar from Zoomies, Cloud7 and Orvis beds, Poopbags.com poop bags, his Thunndershirt seems to also comfort him in that aforementioned home-alone scenario.

If your dog were another animal what animal would that be? Logan is kind of a little Polar Bear—cute, white, rare, big butt, loves fish.

Logan is a seasoned traveler. What are a few of his favorite must-pack items? Any tips for other traveling pups? All his stuff usually goes in a camo LLBean tote. Cold Shoulder Bag cooler bag for food. Collapsible water bowl (forgot brand name). Orvis dog bed in the back seat of the car (he’s not allowed up front—it’s not safe for anyone!). Dr. Bach’s Rescue Remedy homeopathic drops are great the help with anxiety if he needs it, but usually he doesn’t.

If you want to travel with your pup, start early. Get him socialized to plane cabins, train noises and automobile adventures using tasty treats and exciting destinations. Helpful for travel, but also just for a busy lifestyle—don’t get on an exact feeding or walking schedule. Having flexible windows for these activities is great for you and no big deal for the pup if it’s the norm.
