“Chase the Ball” Will Have You Crying and Hugging Your Dog

Nothing is quite like the bond between a dog and his ball. It’s a companionship similar to a child and his blankie — utterly adorable. And it’s the bond that writer-director Kyle Logan hopes to capture in a new animated short film currently making a call for funding on Kickstarter.

To give backers a sense of what the film will look like, Logan has posted a preview of Chase The Ball, which is about a pup and his favorite toy. Set to The Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Little Shadow,” the two-minute video gives us a glimpse into the lifelong friendship between Chase the dog and his trusty tennis ball.

First we see an elderly Chase resting and gazing at the careworn tennis ball. Soon they’re cuddling together, and Chase’s owner comes by to give a pat on the head. Then, the dog, limp in his owner’s arms, is being carried out to the car. We’re seeing things from the ball’s perspective now, and it immediately becomes clear what’s going on. His friend is about to leave him forever.

In a flashback, we see Chase the puppy when he’s small and spunky and first being introduced to his new tennis ball pal. Throughout the years, they play fetch in the mud, hang out with other dog-ball pairs at the park, open Christmas gifts together, seek refuge under a blanket during thunderstorms, and eventually grow old.

In the end, the ball gets to be right by his friend as he’s laid to rest. It’s enough to make you burst into tears and tightly hug the pup curled up next to you on the couch. And that’s only the beginning. The full film still needs to reach its $48,000 Kickstarter funding goal to be produced. Imagine how moving it will be once finished.

With just two weeks left, the campaign needs a good chunk of donations to realize Logan’s ultimate goal of completing the film and submitting it to festivals like Sundance. In addition to finishing the film, Logan also hopes to launch a new nonprofit, Chase the Ball Foundation, which will give animal shelters across the country new dog toys, just like the tennis ball in the film.
