On Dec. 30, some boneheads went to the San Bernardino Animal County Shelter, a high-kill facility, to pick up their dogs — Cookie, 15-year-old Cocker Spaniel, and a 1-year-old Labrador Retriever — who had been brought in as strays.
All well and good, right? Two family dogs got loose, they were picked up as strays, the owners were notified, and they went to pick up their dogs. That’s the way it’s supposed to work, right?
Only, it didn’t work out that way. It nearly did, but our boneheads saw their chance to be mammoth idiots, and they did that job spectacularly. They only picked up one dog. The younger dog.
They left their senior dog behind — in a high-kill shelter.
“Cookie is crying for her family. She watched as the family drove away and left her to die,” said a member of the San Bernardino City Shelter, according to a story in Fido4Ever.
Fortunately, heartless and cruel acts tend to get noticed by people who work at shelters, and the story quickly spread through social media. Soon, she was sprung by OC Small Paws (So UT) and placed in a foster home. Fortunately, the bonehead owners had at least surrendered the dog, which allowed her to go to a new home rather than sit through the seven-day stray hold.
What’s even more shocking about this story is that Cookie appears to have been mistreated as well. She had multiple tumors, her hair was matted, and she smelled “like trash,” according to a OC Small Paws Facebook post, leading staff to assume she was “an outside dog.”
It appeared her abandonment had been happening for a while, as she’d seemingly been tossed in the backyard, ignored.
The group arranged for the Cookie to get much-needed medical attention, and multiple tumors were removed, including one the size of a softball. She’s now doing fine in her foster home, where she’s going to live out the rest of her days.
According to an OC Small Paws Facebook post:
We have made the collective decision to not adopt her out. She will stay under the care of the rescue for the rest of her life in a local forever foster. She also will be under the care of our vet who has already done her first surgery. … We appreciate the outpouring of help on her. At this point she is covered. Please if you are able consider helping a local dog that may not be as lucky as Cookie to have an army of people looking out for her.
