When a dog dies unexpectedly, we often say to each other, “Hug your pet!” It’s a reminder to cherish every single day we have with these beloved family members.
I suggest a follow-up to that sentiment: “Book a pet portrait shoot!”
On Saturday, I took my dogs to the studio of the immensely talented Robyn Arouty. She works as a commercial and portrait photographer here in Houston, and once a month holds what she calls Pocketshots. These 30-minute photo shoots are for dogs and their humans, with a portion of proceeds benefitting Rescued Pets Movement.
I’ll tell you more about Robyn — and share the pics she took of my pups — in the near future, but in this post two of her other Saturday subjects get the spotlight: Phoebe and Bandit.
Meet Phoebe.

Just hours after her Pocketshots session, Phoebe passed away. Robyn posted the above photo and the devastating news on her Facebook page.
Through tears, I can tell you that she lived a wonderful life and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Life is just too precious. Hug your kids. Walk your dog. Apologize to a friend. Live your dreams. Plant that garden. This sucks. … ’Til we meet again sweet Phoebe.
Phoebe’s humans shared in the comments that she was 17 years old and that despite her age, the passing was sudden and unexpected. They also expressed gratitude to Robyn for the beautiful portrait and thanked all who had left condolences.
RIP, Phoebe.
Bandit and his humans also sat for Robyn on Saturday.
Robyn shared the above photo on Facebook along with a bit of information about the handsome pup.
I know. It’s not even Halloween, and I’m posting a Christmas photo. But we break the rules around here. Bandit was diagnosed with adrenal cancer a couple of months ago, and since then his family has been hittin’ his bucket list hard. Pocketshots with his parents is now checked off! Love you, Bandit and family!
Bandit’s humans now have the memory of that special day captured in a beautiful portrait. It can hang in their home and touch their hearts for many years to come. How lovely.
Keeping all of the above in mind, you surely now understand why I recommend booking a pet portrait shoot — sooner rather than later.
