Editor’s Picks: This Dog Mom Loves the Easy-to-Clean Ruggable Floor Covering

I loathe carpet. As a long-time renter, I have always been willing to pay more for a place with hardwoods. My dislike of the fuzzy floor covering stems partly from the horrendous green shag of my childhood home — it was the ‘70s — but mostly from the fact that I have two dogs. Carpet traps hair and dander like no other flooring.

Area rugs also pose a problem. If your dogs are anything like mine, they head straight for the softer surface anytime an upset stomach needs emptying. By all means, Dolly, throw up on the spot-treat-only rug instead of the more easily cleaned floor.

It should come as no surprise now when I tell you that our current home had neither carpet nor area rugs until recently, when the folks at Ruggable pitched us their product. We usually only review pet-specific items, but I immediately saw the potential of this floor covering for those of us with dogs in the home.

Each Ruggable comes with two pieces: a machine-washable fabric top and a water-resistant, non-slip rug pad. You simply lay the top over the bottom, and it all stays put.

We’ve had a Ruggable in the kitchen now for about a month. I’ve washed it twice and vacuum it weekly. Simply put: I love this floor covering. It gives me a soft-padded place to stand when I cook, and Spot prefers it to the hardwoods for napping. When it gets dirty, I just toss it in the wash!

Sold at Ruggable.com and select Lowe’s, JoAnn’s Fabric, and Sears, sizes are 2.5 by 7 feet, 3 by 5 feet, 5 by 7 feet, and 8 by 10 feet. The top and bottom layers are sold separately, which means I will be able to update the look without having to buy the entire system again. I opted for the solid chenille rich grey runner, but a variety of other solid and patterned colors are available, including a perfectly fine shag in winter white. Prices range from $49.99 (top) and $29.99 (bottom) for the 3-by-5-foot Ruggable to $199.99 (top) and $99.99 (bottom) for the 8-by-10-foot size.
