Texas is no stranger to dogs, commonly finding its cities on a variety of America’s top dog-friendly lists. This is partly due to its unique pet-friendly businesses — one which I wish opened a location in my home state — the sprawling 1-acre, off-leash dog park called MUTTS Canine Cantina, with locations in both Dallas and Fort Worth.

The story behind MUTTS Canine Cantina

It was created in 2013 by Kyle Noonan and Josh Sepkowitz, founders of FreeRange Concepts, who wanted to build an urban oasis where pet parents could escape with their four-legged best friends.

“MUTTS is more than your average trip to a community dog park — it’s a life experience,” Kyle says. “MUTTS is a positive and energetic environment where people can escape from the hustle and bustle of life, and relax, have a drink, grab a bite to eat and socialize with other dogs/dog owners.” What makes it so unique? For one, there’s a restaurant and beer garden in the dog park.

What to expect at MUTTS Canine Cantina

You can walk right up to the full bar, which serves craft beer, Barkarita’s and alcoholic popsicles. You’ll also find HDTVs and Adirondack lounge chairs. Or if you’re hungry, try yummy food options like MUTTS Original Chicken Sandwich, burgers, fried pickles (it’s a Southern thing), milkshakes and, of course, a doggie menu for your pup, which includes pupsicles and a doggie dog (bite-sized beef frank). The park part includes two fully enclosed, fenced lawn spaces, one each for small and large dogs. The Dallas location also has agility pieces and courses.

So how do you get a piece of that? Access the park with either a daily, monthly or annual membership. The park has free WiFi (so you can take cute pup pics and upload to Instagram), as well as a dog-washing area. And, I love that it has Bark Rangers who provide water to the dogs and keep the park tidy.

Events at MUTTS Canine Cantina

The MUTTS Canine Cantina hosts a lot of canine-centric events like weekly movie nights, yappy hours and dog birthday pawties. There are some fun annual events, too — the Howl-O-Ween costume contest, Pupsgiving, Santa Paws and pictures with the Easter Bunny.

To see the menu, look at park rules or check out upcoming events, go to MUTTSCantina.com or follow @muttscantina on Instagram or on Facebook @muttscantinadallas or @muttscantinaftworth. Wish there was a location nearer to you? The company is now franchising and looking to open additional locations.
